Stranger Danger

Our class last week had to be urgently cancelled on the morning of the visit by the police due to other issues within the patrol area, this class will be rescheduled in June and an update will be sent inviting all students and parents of the pre school room plus those age appropriate children from the toddlers room.

Dental Hygiene

Dr Rory Dewhurst from Happy Smiles is keen to improve the oral health of children and will be visiting our centre Wednesday 4 June to show children the importance of oral hygiene. The Happy Smiles practice is located at the Rocks Shopping Fair and are bulk billing the Child Dental Benefit Schedule which is a $1,000 Medicare voucher offered to families that receive the Family Tax Benefit Part A with children aged two to seventeen. The Happy Smiles reception can confirm eligibility of the offer and can be contacted on 6567 0310. Both the toddler and preschool rooms will participate in this class. More information on Dr Dewhurst and Happy Smiles can be found here.

Work Placement Student

We will be hosting Leeanne Cagnacci as work placement student who is studying her Certificate III in Early Childhood from Tuesday 10 June for seven days, Leeanne is placed by TAFE as part of her study and she will work under the supervision of our staff and TAFE personnel visits. The normal working with children checks are completed and Leeanne is registered as being on-site. Our long term view is that this supports the childcare sector in developing new workers for the industry.

StEPS Visit

StEPS is a NSW Government Department of Health initiative for 4 year old children for eyesight screening. It is a program that every child that will be attending school in 2015 needs to undertake. It is non invasive and does not use eye drops and will test each eye, results remain confidential between the department and families. Screening will take place at the centre by a Registered Nurse trained in this speciality on Thursday 19 June. if you do not have a booking for the centre on that day we will be making time for each child. We will send home the consent forms and a brochure when they are received, more information on the program can be found here. If you are unable to attend the

Parents with children who will be commencing kindergarten next year should also be aware that the StEPS testing as well as a Healthy Kids Check via their GP are compulsory components of continuing to receive the Family Tax Benefit Part A. More information on the Healthy Kids Check is available here.

Kindergarten transition

June also kickstarts the transition program for our preschoolers who will be attending South West Rocks Primary School from 2015. We have compiled a list of children and will shortly email the program to parents. Feel free to talk to Bec on whether your child is ready for this important step. Stacey Layton is the school co-ordinator and has prepared a program of visits both at the school and in turn with school children coming to the centre on supervised visits. The first visit is set down for Monday 16 June and will involve both parents and children. Mark your calendars as we will need transport and support. The program will run through to December in preparing children for this important milestone.
